2016 Falcon Banding & Naming Contest

Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will visit WoodmenLife May 27 for the annual ritual of banding the new chicks.

The birds, about 4 weeks old, will be collected from the nest to have their genders determined and to get leg bands with unique numbers to help researcher and peregrine enthusiasts track migrations, longevity and productivity. This information is very helpful for identifying areas that may be addressed through conservation efforts.

Once genders are determined, WoodmenLife will be holding the annual “Name the Falcon” contest through Facebook (

Fans will enter their group of four names on the WoodmenLife Facebook contest tab through noon on Friday, June 3. After an internal WoodmenLife committee reviews the names, the top five groups will be re-posted on the WoodmenLife Facebook contest tab, where fans can then vote for their favorite. The top five selections will be posted and voting will begin on Wednesday, June 8 and last through noon, on Wednesday, June 15. The winner will be announced on Thursday, June 16 via Facebook, followed by Twitter and the FalconWatch blog.
